Masa Japanese restaurant is one of the most expensive restaurants in the world, yet everyone who eats there agrees it’s worth every cent. Opened in 2004 by chef Masa Takayama, those who have been describe more than just a meal; it’s a once in a lifetime dining experience.

Prices start at $300 for the cheapest tasting menu – sake not included – and only move steeply uphill from there. Patrons can also expect an enforced 20 per cent gratuity. Though the average cost per head is usually at least $400, the food is some of the best you’ll ever taste and Takayama pays top dollar for it himself.

As far as surroundings go, the restaurant itself is minimalist except for the extravagant $260,000 sushi bar made from rare hinoki wood. Takayama wanted guests to be undistracted by the environment and fully able to focus on the food.

You’ll definitely have to book if you want to eat at the Masa Japanese restaurant. Reservations are taken three weeks in advance, so we’d advise locking in a date as soon as you can. There are 26 seats available in the restaurant.

Masa was the first Japanese restaurant in the U.S. to receive three Michelin Stars. It also received three out of four stars from The New York Times.
