View of downtown Manhattan from the Rockefeller Center

Rockefeller Center

New York’s Rockefeller Center, comprised of 19 high-rise buildings right in the heart of Manhattan, is one of the city’s top tourist attractions. Construction began in 1930 and was a lifeline for 40,000 employees during the Great Depression. Because of this, the center holds an important place in New York’s history.

Though tourists come to admire the architecture across the entire Rockefeller Center, most make a beeline for 30 Rockefeller Plaza, affectionately known as 30 Rock. As the tallest of all the buildings within the center, it was the natural home for the simply stunning observation deck, located on the 70th floor.

The 30 Rock observation deck experience is known as Top of the Rock, and tickets should be purchased in advance if you want to snag a spot. Prices start at $30 and go all the way up to $85 depending on the day, time, and package (VIP tickets are the most expensive). Combo passes including the observation deck and the Rockefeller Center Tour are also available on the official website.

If you don’t want to check out the breathtaking views over Central Park and the rest of New York City, you can still purchase tickets for the Rockefeller Center Tour for just $25. Visitors will learn about the history and architecture of the buildings from an expert guide.

Television lovers will be in heaven on the NBC Studios Tour. For $33, you’ll get a behind the scenes experience filled with entertainment history and access to the studios of your NBC favourites, including Saturday Night Live and The Tonight Show.

In New York City during December? Don’t miss the iconic Christmas tree and the full schedule of holiday activities, including the Rockefeller Center Ice Skating Rink (known as The Rink), which is open throughout winter.
