If you know anything about eating fine food in New York, you’re likely to have encountered Michael White’s cooking before. He’s a star of the city’s restaurant scene, and Ai Fiori is just one more jewel in his crown.
Serving primarily Italian cuisine with just a pinch of flavour from its Mediterranean neighbours, you can find this must-see eatery within the luxurious confines of the Langham Place Hotel.
Within the atmospheric and brooding dark-wood diner, White has put together an experienced and gifted squad of chefs and servers who know the New York restaurant scene like the backs of their hands, including Scott Schneider in the kitchen. His take on Italian food is big on savoury sensations, including gnocchi coated with sage butter and mild cheese, served with red wine jus, and a dish of long island duck breast accompanied by radicchio, pistachio and beets.
For food of this quality, the pricing structure is more than reasonable. The four-course prix-fixe menu comes in at $108 per person, rising to $125 if you’d like to sample the elegant and thoughtful vegetarian tasting menu. If you see something on the menu that you decide you simply can’t miss out on – and who could blame you- perhaps you’d prefer the seven-course tasting menu which comes in at $150. Whatever you do, leave room for a gelato or sorbetto treat at the end; nobody does ice cream or sorbet like the Italians, and even fewer do it as well as Ai Fiori.
